Smartphone dash mount
My Fiat 500e has a dashboard connector for a GPS device. I decided to mount a smartphone there instead. What I ended up with seems to work fine, but I can imagine something much simpler that could be 3D printed.
First, I looked for the least expensive cradle that fits the port. I found something on eBay that was under $60 USD with shipping. The cradle I found did not come with any electrical components, which is fine for now.
Next, I looked for a simple air vent cradle with an expandable mount. I found something on Amazon for under $10 USD.
Taking apart the cradle was a bit complicated, with several tiny screws.
I used bit of Super Glue to keep the socket from spinning where the two components meet, and now the new component swivels perfectly.
The finished mount is adjustment and can be removed quickly and stowed. Now I’d like to figure out how to jack into the power connector.
I’ve also stumbled across a 3D printed mount that should work fine.
UPDATE: I’ve found a fairly inexpensive cradle (on eBay) with the electronics intact. I should be able to modify it to take smartphone cradle and still tap into the power source from the doc. I’ll need to check the outputs on my meter (with some help from friends).
